But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him. - 2 Chronicles 10:8

Do you know how hard it is for a man to ask for directions? I can almost hear every woman in America shouting, "Yes!" AutoGuide reports that, on average, men drive 276 miles farther than women each year, simply because they won't ask for help!
Well, here is some insight to the problem. Most men hate to admit that they don't know where they're going, be it on a highway or in life. Asking for directions or guidance is equivalent to admitting failure and most men struggle with that idea.
Rehoboam, king of Israel, wanted to exert control over his newfound kingdom and rather than seek advice, he sought affirmation. If a man seeks counsel, then he must be willing to admit that he doesn't have all of the answers, another perceived sign of weakness. The alternative is to look for someone who will affirm the direction he has already chosen. On the other hand, possessing the humility to admit dependence is a sure sign of spiritual health, and a healthy self-image. Just remember guys, it doesn't come naturally. It must be cultivated within a deepening relationship with Christ.
We give credit to human wisdom when we should give credit to the divine guidance of God being exhibited through childlike people who were “foolish” enough to trust God’s wisdom and His supernatural equipment. - Oswald Chambers
