Not All "Balaam's"

By abandoning the straight path, they have gone astray and have followed the path of Balaam, the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.... - 2 Peter 2:15

For about two-thirds of four decades in vocational ministry, I have had the privilege of serving as the pastor of a local church. The other third was in some form of missions service (on the field and in leadership). In my mind, there is no greater service in God's Kingdom than shepherding a local "flock," and unfortunately, often no greater difficulty. Generally-speaking, pastors are often under-compensated (not in my case) and many of them struggle to meet the needs of their families. Some churches are just too small and require a bi-vocational shepherd, but others that are capable of meeting those needs, just choose not to do so.

On the other hand, some pastors may also be grossly over-compensated, treated as if they were CEO's of major corporations and paid at a level commensurate with their perceived responsibility. Listen, pastors should not be treated like employees who earn a wage based upon the merits of their performance. They are God's under-shepherds, appointed by Him to serve His local church. While needs certainly vary from pastor to pastor (large family, small family, no family, other obligations, etc.), the basis of support should always be the need, not the size of the church or the work.

Could some churches do more? Yes, but others should do less. Of course, many do all they can and it still isn't enough. In any case, too many churches are influenced more by civil and commercial principles than biblical ones.

Pastors, if we act like Balaam, we should not be surprised if we are treated like him. Church, not all pastors are "Balaam's," so don't treat them like they are.

I am now going from a prison to a palace: I have finished my work, and am now going to receive my wages. - Christopher Love
