Pass the Peppers, Please

For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. - 2 Peter 2:21

If you knew that something was bad for you, if you knew it was harmful, wouldn't you stop it?

Oh, if only that was true! You see, I love spicy food, but often it doesn't love me back. For example, when we lived in Africa, peppers were abundant. The markets were full of every color and shape imaginable and though they varied, they had one thing in common, heat! They would "light you up." This potent vegetable didn't give me a problem on the ingestion side. I like the taste. My problem was (and still is) in the digestion. Yet, I continue to try them, thinking the next time won't be so bad. Wrong!

From God's Word and by experience, every believer should know the harm of sin, yet too many continue as if there will be no bad consequences. How often have we thought, "This time things will be different," but they never are. By now, shouldn't we all know better?

Until the pain of regret exceeds any momentary. fleeting pleasure, many will continue to pay the price and endure the pain. "Pass the peppers, please?"

Logical consequences are the scarecrows of fools and the beacons of wise men. - Thomas Huxley
