As for this temple, which was exalted, every passerby will be appalled and will say, "Why did Yahweh do this to this land and this temple?" - 2 Chronicles 7:21

Just in case they forgot the reason that the temple in Jerusalem had lost its former glory (at that certain point in the future when God obviously knew it would occur), God took a moment to remind Solomon of an inevitable formula for failure. What did God say? God told Solomon that He would destroy the country and the temple if the people abandoned Him and attached themselves to other gods. Or, to put it another way, God said: "If you turn from me, don't expect me to be there for you when it all falls apart."
There is not a single Christ-follower on the face of the earth who is surprised by the social and cultural decline we have seen in many Western countries. The question for those of us in who might think, "That will never happen here," is whether or not we will be surprised when it does. Paul said it best, "Don't be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap, because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit (Galatians 6:7-8)."
We, be it church or nation, will reap what we sow. May we always be sowing the gospel.
By a Carpenter mankind was made, and only by that Carpenter can mankind be remade. - Desiderius Erasmus
