Stop Digging

At the time of his distress, King Ahaz himself became more unfaithful to Yahweh. - 2 Chronicles 28:22

There is an old proverb that states, "If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging." In his moment of distress, a rebellious King Ahaz became more unfaithful to God. He just kept on digging.

As a shepherd of God's flock, I am always surprised when someone continues down a path that is obviously leading to their own destruction. On more than one occasion, I have even told them to please stop digging! Unfortunately, it didn't work as often as I hoped because it seemed that even if I had taken their "shovel" away, they would have just used their own two hands.

I came to understand that only God Himself can show a person that, in fact, down is not up, that "works" can neither save nor sanctify. Those without Christ keep digging because they think that it is the only answer to their crisis, need, or hunger. Those with Christ often must suffer His chastisement in order to be brought to a deeper understanding of their rebellion. So sad, but often so true.

Are you in a hole? For God's sake (and your own), stop digging.

It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so. - Mark Twain
