At about three in the afternoon Jesus cried out, with a loud voice, "Eli`, Eli`, lema` sebachtha`ni?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" - Matthew 27:46

If anyone doubts the veracity of Scripture, he should look to passages such as this.

Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Matthew recorded (for all eternity) these words of Christ from the cross. Being an ex-tax collector who wrote with the purpose of proving that the Nazarene named Jesus was the Messiah that God had promised, it would have seemed appropriate for Matthew to have "edited" this one statement. Seeing that Jesus' words could be construed by doubters as the despairing words of a disillusioned, dying man, why would Matthew include them?

First, Jesus spoke them and His Word is truth. Second, in His own words we understand the depth of Jesus' sacrifice. Beyond the physical pain was the anguish of momentary separation between Father and Son over the sin of all mankind (including my sin and yours). Finally, being fully human, Jesus felt every moment of His Father's abandonment and yet, being fully God, He endured it for us all.

Thank God, it is finished. That's truth!

Jesus' willing sacrifice on Calvary makes every other act of service in human history pale in comparison. - Kevin Harney
