If someone sins and without knowing it violates any of the LORD's commands concerning anything prohibited, he bears the consequences of his guilt. - Leviticus 5:17

In the biblical account of Jesus' encounter with the rich young ruler, the young man was convinced that he had a perfect record of obedience before God. Of course, when Jesus asked him to give up his wealth, he went away grieved.
There is a tendency within each of us to lower God's standard to such an extent that we might attain it by our own righteousness. The problem with that tendency is that God's standard of righteousness is beyond our comprehension. It extends beyond that which we even know to do. Before God, we are even held accountable for the sins that escape our immediate awareness. Yes, we can even sin without knowing it.
Therefore, the only answer to man's sinfulness is God's grace and mercy. There is no way we could ever earn His favor. Especially when you consider the fact that apart from His intervention, mankind wouldn't even know God's favor was needed.
