A Call to Preach

Not many should become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment; for we all stumble in many ways. - James 3:1-2a

I never aspired to be a pastor-teacher. For the first eight and a half years of my post-college life I worked as an accountant. I even contemplated opening my own private CPA practice; however, on September 30, 1986 that all changed because I heard God's unmistakable call to preach His Word.

My early attempts (and some might even say "current") at preaching were at best comical and at worst pathetic, but I always tried to deliver God's message and not my own. Even today I can sometimes get in the way; a wrong word or personal opinion can hide or eclipse God's truth. Verbal stumbling is part of every preacher's life and only by God's grace and mercy are they able to continue.

God's pulpit (for it is His, not the preacher's), is a place to be entered with trepidation, but those who are called to proclaim God's truth must enter anyway. Please pray for them!

The Holy Spirit is certainly the best preacher in the world, and the words of Scripture the best sermons. - Jeremy Taylor
