A Foolish Life

It has happened to them according to the true proverb: "A dog returns to its own vomit" and, "a sow, after washing itself, wallows in the mud." - 2 Peter 2:22

Yes, it's gross, but if you have ever owned a dog, then you have certainly seen it do exactly what Peter's words describe. On the other hand, having possessed many canines in my life, I can never remember seeing one get sick on that "second course." Now, if something made a dog sick once, wouldn't it make it sick again? Not, if for some reason, the animal had built up a resistance to the "offending" substance.
Pigs also love mud. You can bathe a pig, brush a pig, even perfume pig and put a bow on it, but if you turn your back on one near a mudhole, it will head straight for it.
The horrifying effects of sin are, at first, offensive to most (and often sickening), but if continued they can become more and more palatable even as the hardened soul builds up a resistance to the offense. To know that such destructive consequences exist, and yet continue to seek them, is a sure sign of a life lived foolishly (Proverbs 26:11).
To love a holy God requires grace, grace strong enough to pierce our hardened hearts and awaken our moribund souls. - R. C. Sproul
