Empty Words

For uttering bombastic, empty words, they seduce, by fleshly desires and debauchery, people who have barely escaped from those who live in error. - 2 Peter 2:18

An acquaintance of mine once described another man in this way, "He sure has much to say for a man who doesn't really say much." Peter, in his continuing condemnation of false teachers, spoke of their "bombastic (grandiose), empty words." Though they spoke often (and loudly), they really didn't have much to say.

Have you ever known someone who, in trying to make a point, just spoke louder and faster? In my discussions about some modern-day television preacher/personalities, I have often heard, "Yes, I heard something was not right about him/her, but I sure like their preaching!"

Friend, it is my understanding that if a message is really good (as God defines "good"), we may not actually like it! The test is not our personal comfort with what is being delivered, but rather does it carry the weight and substance of a word from God. We must avoid the promotion of empty words and the empty-headed messengers who speak them.

A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent. - John Calvin
