He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. - Colossians 1:17

Sometimes I am led to a verse or passage of Scripture and when I jot it down in my journal I am not initially aware of why. At other times, I am immediately cognizant of a truth that God has revealed and a post just seems to write itself. This verse fell into the former category and urged me toward deeper, more thoughtful meditation, which is another reason I love God and His Word.
From this simple sentence I understand that before the earth and matter were formed, before man took his first breath, before sin, before every war, famine, massacre, simple tragedy, or difficulty of life, Christ was and is pre-eminent. I also comprehend that in spite of the partial unraveling of which we are all witnesses (creation, culture, morality, etc.), a complete dissolution is held back by Christ's powerful, sustaining, restraining hand.
These few simple words mean so much in days like these for though we may not have any idea what today (or tomorrow) will bring, there is a measure of peace that can be ours because He knows and He holds.
God's providence is not blind, but full of eyes. - John Greenleaf Whittier
