... and if He rescued righteous Lot, distressed by the unrestrained behavior of the immoral (for as he lived among them, that righteous man tormented himself day by day with the lawless deeds he saw and heard).... - 2 Peter 2:7-8

Biblical history records the actions of Lot's two daughters and in their continuing story we might conclude that perhaps Lot and his family should have left Sodom and Gomorrah long before God brought judgment on those two cities. Obviously, Lot was grieved by all that went on around him, but his influence was ineffective and it ultimately would not, could not assuage the wrath of an Almighty God.
There are many possible spiritual truths to be extracted from this account by Peter and I am hesitant to choose just one. Suffice it to say that while God's chastisement may certainly be experienced by all those who belong to Him, His wrath will never fall on a Christ-follower. Of course, such protection does not extend to anyone else, be it a nation or a people.
Only those who are in the Son will ever know the Father's tender, eternal care.
We were lost and dead in sin. We were by nature objects of God's wrath. But God loved us! That Love caused Him to do something about our situation. God is rich in mercy, so He made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. God acted on His love for us and saved us by His grace! Grace is the result of the actions of His love. The remarkable thing about His grace is that He didn't ask us to do anything, but believe Him. God didn't ask us to perform some great deed. He didn't demand obedience from us before He would save us. God made us alive with Christ "even when we were dead in transgressions and sins." God is showing the universe "the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:7)." God was kind to us "in" Christ because He loved us. - Mark McGee
