Simple Dependence with a Singular Purpose

Whatever house you enter, first say, "Peace to this household." If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. - Luke 10:5-6

Jesus gave very clear, simple, and purposed instructions to the 70 that He sent out into the Judean countryside.

First, He wanted them to begin to learn dependence upon the Holy Spirit. They needed to know that their sustenance, protection, and success came from God and no other source. Days were coming when He would be all they had in this world and He wanted them to be ready.

The Lord also stressed a singularity of purpose. We see this in His instructions that: 1) they not "greet anyone on the road," 2) that they offer nothing more than God's peace when they entered a home, and 3) that they remain with the son of peace until Jesus arrived.

The disciples practiced simple dependence with a singular purpose, as should we. Let us move out today in obedience to Christ's express desire that He might win some to Himself.

I'd rather have people hate me with the knowledge that I tried to save them. - Keith Green
